My work is concerned with the haptic and concepts linked to transitional space. Change and transience are inherent in the physical processes of my making and consequently, guide and structure my decision-making. The looping of handmade cordage or random weaving of willow appears chaotic until, working with the dynamic and tensile qualities of the material, a potential form is suggested and a structure begins to emerge. This work explores how this process can be considered as movement through transitional spaces and if the initial feelings of excitement and energy can be retained within the captured space of the refined and completed work.
Combining traditional basketry techniques and fibres from locally grown plant material, I look for connections between space which is contained, the space inhabited and the space that flows between and through forms.
